Periodic Table Secrets: Indigo

Two instances of indigo, the color between blue and violet, can be found in the periodic table.

First there is element 49, which is Indium. The word Indium is derived from the word “indigo”, a color that can be found in the element’s spectrum. The second instance is a derivative from the colors of the rainbow. Element 54, Xenon, is between Iodine and Caesium. Iodine, or element 53, is rooted from the word “iodes”, meaning violet while Caesium, or element 55, is rooted from the word “caesius” which means “sky blue”. So between violet and sky blue is indigo, which is element 54.

To conclude, 49 in base 9 is 54. Thus, 49 (base 10) = 54 (base 9).

Both are equal.
