Theoretical Alchemy: The Golden Ratio Of Jabir

"..According to Jabir, metals were formed by differing impurities and concentrations of Sulfur and Mercury. Gold was the purest and most balanced or perfect combination of this primal pair.." - The Complete Idiot's Guide to Alchemy

So yeah we have the sulfur and mercury theory of Jabir. You may ask, "what must be the amount of sulfur and mercury to be able to make gold?" That question was impossible to answer since there was no exact value set by Jabir. Until now.

This text will try to present a probable solution to the question.

The Periodic Table
------------------

"The periodic table is the most important chemistry reference there is. It arranges all the known elements in an informative array. Elements are arranged left to right and top to bottom in order of increasing atomic number. Order generally coincides with increasing atomic mass." - <http://periodic.lanl.gov/what.htm>

Periodic table is like a map to chemists. It tells them different information about elements - the atomic number, weight, properties, etc. Of course, the periodic table can also be useful to alchemists since older generation of alchemists indirectly influenced its creation. Meaning, there are traces of alchemy in the periodic table.

"Rows in the periodic table are called periods. As one moves from left to right in a given period, the chemical properties of the elements slowly change. Columns in the periodic table are called groups. Elements in a given group in the periodic table share many similar chemical and physical properties. The link below will open a copy of the periodic table of elements in a new window. " <http://www.visionlearning.com/library/module_viewer.php?mid=52>

Platinum = Gold + Silver, Establishing the Pattern Set By Alchemists
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Alchemists believed platinum to be an amalgamation of gold and silver, thus its alchemical symbol. <http://www.rsc.org/chemsoc/visualelements/pages/alchemist/alc_platinum.html>

In the periodic table, platinum (Pt) is element 78. To the right of platinum is gold (Au) which is element 79. On top of gold is silver (Ag) which is element 47.

| xx | Ag | } component
___________
| Pt | Au | } component

Pt = Au + Ag.

Gold, following the pattern established by platinum
---------------------------------------------------

In the periodic table, gold is element 79. To the right of gold is mercury which is element 80. On top of mercury, there is cadmium which is element 48.

| xx | Cd | } component
___________
| Au | Hg | } component

Au = Hg + Cd(?).

Cadmium
-------

Cadmium has 48 protons. Surprisingly, we can evenly divide the number of protons of cadmium by the number of protons of sulfur, which has 16 protons.

48/16 = 3.

Thus, Cadmium is 3x the value of sulfur.

Gold = Mercury + Sulfur
-----------------------

Gold is one part Mercury and 3 parts Sulfur.
